Boston, MA – Today, the Massachusetts Senate adjourned in solemn memory of Peter Lappin, a decorated veteran, longtime public servant, and beloved member of the Western Massachusetts community. Peter Lappin of Springfield passed away peacefully on June 29, 2025, at the age of 86. A man whose life was rooted in service, from his time in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War to his years on Beacon Hill, Lappin leaves behind a legacy defined by humility, patriotism, and unwavering dedication to his community.
"Peter Lappin was a proud son of Western Massachusetts whose public service and personal integrity set a lasting example for us all," said Senator Oliveira. "From his military service to his role in the Legislature and the Governor's Council, Peter approached every chapter of life with a sense of duty and care for others. It was an honor to adjourn the Senate in his memory and recognize a life well-lived in the service of others."
"Peter Lappin's life was marked by his tireless commitment to public service, advocacy for his fellow veterans, and the cultural vitality of Springfield," said Senator Gomez. "Adjourning the Senate in his memory is a gesture befitting of a man who dedicated himself to the City of Springfield."
Lappin was educated at Cathedral High School in Springfield and remained active in the community throughout his life. He was instrumental in organizing the World's Largest Pancake Breakfast and was named Veteran of the Year in 2008 for his continued support of fellow servicemembers. A devoted father and grandfather, Peter's commitment to family was as steadfast as his commitment to public life.
He is survived by his daughters, Meghan Dudas and Moira Lappin-Coutinho, their spouses, and three grandchildren: Aubrey, Haylee, and Madison.
The Senate adjourned today in recognition of Peter Lappin's extraordinary service and enduring impact. A copy of the Senate's adjournment order will be sent to his family in acknowledgment of the Commonwealth's gratitude and shared loss.
