Among those representing the district were Library Directors Joe Rodio of South Hadley and Stephanie Maher of Palmer, who attended the seminar at Senator Oliveira’s invitation. The program included two days of meetings, lectures, and interactive sessions designed to provide participants with a deeper understanding of how the Legislature operates.
During his remarks, Senator Oliveira spoke on the Commonwealth’s historical heritage and the enduring significance of the Massachusetts State House. He highlighted the building’s history and its role as a center of democratic governance.
“Completed in 1798, the Massachusetts State House is one of the oldest continuously and still used Legislative buildings in the United States,” said Senator Oliveira. “That it still serves as home to the Legislature of the Commonwealth speaks volumes to the enduring nature of our system of government: Democracy.”
Senator Oliveira also emphasized the importance of the Citizens’ Legislative Seminar as a way to make government more accessible.
“The Citizens’ Legislative Seminar is a great opportunity to peel back the curtain and remove some of the mystery around how the Legislature works,” Oliveira said. “By opening the doors and walking through both the history and the process, we help residents better understand how decisions are made and how they can be part of that process.”
